Methodology

## What this measures

Real gross domestic product, percent change from the year before, at constant prices. Benin.

## Why it matters

Growth sets the pace of demand, hiring and tax receipts. The IMF uses one method for every economy, so countries and regions compare cleanly, and its forecasts are the reference most finance ministries and markets quote.

## How to read it

Above zero means the economy grew in real terms. World and regional aggregates weight countries by GDP at purchasing-power parity.

Each point is one year's figure in the newest World Economic Outlook, dated December 31. The series stops the year before the WEO's own year; the IMF's forecast from there is a separate series (the same name with "IMF Projection"), so this line never mixes measured and forecast years. The newest year is often still an IMF estimate, and the whole history is revised with each edition.

## What it does not say

Forecasts are IMF staff judgment at the time of the WEO, revised with every edition. Recent years are often estimates until national statistics are final.
