Methodology

## What this measures

Gross domestic product at current prices, converted to international dollars at purchasing-power parity (ICP benchmarks 2017–2021), in billions. Jordan.

## Why it matters

Measures the size of an economy by what its output would buy at one common set of prices, so a large, cheap economy is not shrunk by its exchange rate. It is the weight the IMF uses for world and regional growth.

## How to read it

A level, in billions of international dollars. Emerging economies are larger on this measure than at market exchange rates.

Each point is one year's figure in the newest World Economic Outlook, dated December 31. The series stops the year before the WEO's own year; the IMF's forecast from there is a separate series (the same name with "IMF Projection"), so this line never mixes measured and forecast years. The newest year is often still an IMF estimate, and the whole history is revised with each edition.

## What it does not say

PPP rates are benchmarked every few years and extrapolated in between; a new benchmark can revise every year at once. Not a measure of what an economy can buy on world markets (see GDP in US dollars).
