Methodology
## What this measures
India's goods trade balance with the world, trailing 12 months, in billions of US dollars. It is the sum of monthly merchandise trade balances over the past year.
## Background
India's goods trade balance with the world, trailing 12 months, $ billions.
Σ12 of the monthly merchandise trade balance from the OECD's International Merchandise Trade Statistics (FRED XTNTVA01INM667S, US dollars, seasonally adjusted) ÷ 1e9. Computed monthly by /api/cron/fred-composites.
## Why it matters
The goods trade balance shows whether India is a net exporter or importer of merchandise, which affects currency flows, foreign exchange reserves, and domestic industrial capacity. A persistent deficit signals reliance on foreign goods and potential pressure on the rupee, while a surplus indicates export strength. Organizations with India exposure use it to anticipate currency risk, import cost changes, and the health of export-dependent sectors.
## How to read it
A negative value indicates a trade deficit; a positive value indicates a surplus. A rising value means the deficit is shrinking or the surplus is growing; a falling value means the deficit is widening or the surplus is shrinking. The trailing twelve-month window smooths monthly volatility and reveals the underlying trend.
## What it does not say
It covers only merchandise trade, not services. It does not identify which trading partners, product categories, or sectors are driving the balance, nor does it reveal the causes of any shift.
