Methodology
## What this measures
The rate at which employers hired new employees, reported monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. It is expressed as hires per 100 employees.
## Why it matters
The hires rate shows how quickly organizations are filling positions and whether labor demand is expanding or contracting. A rising rate signals competitive pressure for talent and may foreshadow wage growth, while a falling rate can indicate cooling demand or tighter hiring standards. Considered alongside the quits rate, it reveals whether the labor market favors employers or workers.
## How to read it
A higher rate means more hiring activity relative to total employment. Compare it to the quits rate to assess churn and worker confidence; when hires exceed quits, employment is growing.
## What it does not say
It does not reveal which industries are hiring, why positions are being filled, or the quality and durability of new jobs.
