Methodology
## What this measures
The number of announced job cuts in the month that employers attributed to artificial intelligence, as recorded in the Challenger report's reasons breakdown. Present only for months in which the report states the figure (AI first appeared as a tracked reason in 2023).
## Why it matters
This is the one public series where a firm says, on the record, that a machine replaced the role. It is the demand-side evidence for AI Margin Compression.
## How to read it
As a share of the total (`labor.challenger.job_cuts`). AI was the leading stated reason for five consecutive months in 2026; the share crossing 20% of all cuts is the regime marker.
## What it does not say
Stated reasons are what employers choose to say. Cuts attributed to "restructuring" or "technological update" may be AI-driven and are not counted here.
