S&P 500 directors with an Ivy League degree

Latest

24.4%

Methodology

## What this measures

Of the S&P 500's directors whose school is known, the share with any degree (undergraduate, graduate or professional) from one of the eight Ivy League universities: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale. Their business, law and medical schools count (Harvard Business School, Wharton).

## Why it matters

A handful of universities are often said to supply corporate America's leadership. This measures how concentrated it is, from the companies' own filings.

## How to read it

In 2026, 434 of 1,782 (24.4%). In 2014: 27.4%.

## What it does not say

Many proxy statements print no education, and the practice has grown over the years, so the share with a known school moves with disclosure as well as with people; the coverage series says how many are known each year. Degrees are as the company states them. A person counts once per university, however many degrees they hold from it. CEOs are nearly complete (one per company, from the 10-K certification); for directors and executive officers the population is the people whose biographies the rules found in each proxy, which is most but not every board seat or officer.

## How it's built

For every S&P 500 member on 1 July of each year (read point in time from the index's published constituent list as it stood that day), Palanor takes the proxy statement (DEF 14A) in force that day, the latest filed in the previous eighteen months, and reads its director biographies. The CEO is the officer who signs the principal-executive certification on the company's latest 10-K. Fixed rules read who earned which degree where; a model reads only the biographies the rules could not, and its answers are kept only when the person and the school appear word for word in the filing. Where no filing states a leader's school, Wikidata's "educated at" (CC0) fills in, only when the person's name and their company (by SEC CIK) both match exactly; it can include study that did not end in a degree. Schools are matched to the Research Organization Registry; business, law and medical schools count toward their university. A degree is a lifetime fact: one read from any year's filing counts in every year the person is in the population. A hand check of a random sample against the filings came before publishing.
