Methodology
## What this measures
The share of the euro-area labour force without work and actively looking, seasonally adjusted, all ages, both sexes, current composition.
## Why it matters
The euro area's slack gauge. It moves late — firms hoard labour through European employment law — so a rise here confirms a slowdown rather than predicting one.
## How to read it
Direction over three months. Tenths matter: the series moves in 0.1 steps and a 0.3 rise over a quarter is a real turn.
## What it does not say
Nothing about participation, hours, or short-time work schemes, all of which absorb European downturns before the headline rate does.
