Methodology

## What this measures

The number of people born in the United States living in Uruguay, on 1 July of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2024, from the UN's International Migrant Stock 2024 (destination and origin). The UN builds this estimate from data on people born abroad (the foreign-born population) and adds refugees, asylum seekers and people in refugee-like situations reported by UNHCR (or UNRWA) (type of data "B R").

## Why it matters

How many Americans by birth have settled in another country is a measure of ties between the United States and that country: family, retirement, work and study abroad. Moves out of the United States get far less attention than moves in; the UN's estimates are the standard way to compare them across countries.

## How to read it

Each point is dated July 1; the last step (2020 to 2024) is four years. Compare countries with the same measure: the total across every country is migration.undesa.us_born_abroad.total. All migrants living in Uruguay, from every origin, are migration.undesa.stock.<country code> where Palanor carries it.

## What it does not say

It counts people born in the United States, whatever their citizenship: it includes children born in the United States who moved with their parents to their parents' home country (Mexico has many), and leaves out U.S. citizens born abroad. It is not a count of U.S. citizens or passport holders, or of voters abroad, and it counts people who live in a country, not visitors. The UN aligns national censuses, registers and surveys to a common date, so years without a recent census are estimated and are revised with each edition.
