Methodology
## What this measures
This measures the total hours actually worked in a year divided by the average number of people in employment in France, including both employees and self-employed workers.
## Background
Total hours actually worked in the year divided by the average number of people in employment (employees and self-employed), from national labour force surveys and accounts, compiled by the OECD (dataflow DSD_HW@DF_AVG_ANN_HRS_WKD). Levels differ in method across countries, so compare each country's trend rather than levels between countries. Annual; synced monthly by /api/cron/worldbank-sync with a DBnomics mirror as fallback.
## Why it matters
It shows how intensively the French workforce is utilized, revealing whether organizations are relying on longer hours per person or adjusting headcount. Changes signal shifts in labor market norms, productivity strategy, or the balance between full-time and part-time work that affect hiring and capacity planning.
## How to read it
A rise means people in employment work more hours on average; a fall means fewer hours per person. Compare the trend within France over time rather than levels across countries, because methods differ internationally.
## What it does not say
It does not distinguish between full-time and part-time workers, measure productivity per hour, or explain whether changes reflect employer demand, employee preference, or regulation.
