Methodology

## What this measures

Average annual hours actually worked per person in employment in Italy. The measure counts total hours worked in the year divided by the average number of people employed, including employees and self-employed.

## Background

Total hours actually worked in the year divided by the average number of people in employment (employees and self-employed), from national labour force surveys and accounts, compiled by the OECD (dataflow DSD_HW@DF_AVG_ANN_HRS_WKD). Levels differ in method across countries, so compare each country's trend rather than levels between countries. Annual; synced monthly by /api/cron/worldbank-sync with a DBnomics mirror as fallback.

## Why it matters

Working hours reveal labor utilization and shifts in work arrangements that affect productivity, staffing needs and demand patterns. Countries with falling hours per worker may rely more on employment growth to expand output, while rising hours may signal tighter labor markets or changing norms around full-time work.

## How to read it

A rise means each employed person worked more hours on average during the year; a fall means fewer. Because measurement methods differ across countries, compare trends within Italy rather than absolute levels between countries.

## What it does not say

This does not distinguish between full-time and part-time workers, nor does it show how hours are distributed across industries or occupations. It does not indicate whether changes reflect voluntary preferences, labor regulation or economic pressure.
