Methodology

## What this measures

This measures the average annual hours actually worked per person in employment in Mexico, including both employees and self-employed workers. It is compiled annually by the OECD from national labour force surveys and accounts.

## Background

Total hours actually worked in the year divided by the average number of people in employment (employees and self-employed), from national labour force surveys and accounts, compiled by the OECD (dataflow DSD_HW@DF_AVG_ANN_HRS_WKD). Levels differ in method across countries, so compare each country's trend rather than levels between countries. Annual; synced monthly by /api/cron/worldbank-sync with a DBnomics mirror as fallback.

## Why it matters

Hours worked signal the intensity of labor utilization in the economy, beyond headcount employment alone. Sustained changes in average hours can reflect shifts in work arrangements, underemployment, business cycle pressures, or structural changes in how organizations deploy their workforce. Because this is a lagging indicator, it confirms trends that have already unfolded rather than forecasting what comes next.

## How to read it

A rise means workers are putting in longer hours on average; a fall means shorter hours. Because measurement methods differ across countries, compare the trend within Mexico over time rather than the level against other nations. This is an annual series, so it captures the full-year average rather than quarterly or monthly swings.

## What it does not say

This does not reveal whether longer hours reflect stronger demand for labor or insufficient hiring, nor does it distinguish between full-time and part-time work, overtime, or involuntary reductions in hours.
