South Korea · Child Poverty Rate (under 18) · % below half the median income

Latest

8.5% of children

Methodology

## What this measures

The share of children under 18 in South Korea living in households whose disposable income is below half the national median, after taxes and cash transfers, in percent. Income is adjusted for household size (the OECD's square-root scale). One value per income year, dated December 31.

## Why it matters

Relative poverty measures how many children fall far behind the typical household in their own country. It reflects wages, employment, family structure and how much taxes and benefits redistribute, and it is the measure the OECD uses to compare countries.

## How to read it

Higher means more children below the line. Compare it with the rate for the whole population (oecd.idd.poverty_rate): where children's rate is above the total, families with children are more exposed. Countries survey in different years; the newest year differs from country to country, and some report every second year.

## What it does not say

The line moves with each country's median, so a rich country and a poorer one can show the same rate at very different living standards. It counts income only, not wealth, housing costs or services such as health care and schooling. Survey changes can shift the level.
