Methodology
## What this measures
The number of socio-environmental conflicts, active and latent, that the Defensoría del Pueblo attributes to mining activity in the month, from the activity breakdown of its monthly Reporte de Conflictos Sociales. It covers formal and informal mining.
## Why it matters
Mining is the activity behind most of Peru's socio-environmental disputes. This count is the most direct public read on community opposition and pressure around mining in one of the world's largest copper, gold, silver and zinc producers, and it is watched by investors, lenders and anyone working on a mine's relationship with the people around it.
## How to read it
Higher means more mining-related disputes on the register. Read it as a share of the socio-environmental count, and with the active count for current disruption.
## What it does not say
It counts disputes, not their size, and includes disputes over informal and illegal mining as well as large-scale operations. Published only when the report text and the activity table give the same number.
