Methodology
## What this measures
The number of conflicts, active and latent, that the Defensoría del Pueblo classes as socio-environmental: disputes over control, use or access to the environment and its resources, such as water, land, pollution and the effects of mining, oil and gas, and other extractive projects. From the monthly Reporte de Conflictos Sociales.
## Why it matters
Socio-environmental disputes are the largest type on Peru's register and the one most tied to natural-resource projects. They are the clearest public measure of community pressure around mines, oil fields and water in the country.
## How to read it
Higher means more disputes over resources and environment. Read it with the mining series, which is the largest part of it, and with the total to see its share.
## What it does not say
It counts conflicts, not their size. Types are assigned by the Defensoría; a dispute with several causes is classed by its main one. Published only when the type table, the activity table and the report text agree.
