Methodology

## What this measures

Daily cooling degree days (65°F base) for the contiguous US, weighted by population, from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. A day averaging 80°F counts 15 cooling degree days; a day at or below 65°F counts zero.

## Why it matters

Cooling degree days measure summer heat where people live: air-conditioning load on the power grid, and the outdoor-season weather that drives grilling, patio and outdoor recreation demand.

## How to read it

Higher means hotter. The series sits near zero from late autumn to spring and peaks in July and August. Compare a week or a month with the same period in prior years, or sum over a season, rather than reading single days.

## What it does not say

It is temperature only: rain, wind and humidity, which also decide whether people spend a weekend outdoors, are not in it. Population weighting reflects where people live, not where any business sells.
