Methodology
## What this measures
Acres burned by wildland fire in the United States from January 1 to the date, as reported in the NIFC National Fire News.
## Why it matters
Fire is the hazard that reaches insurance, timber, power-line liability, and air quality in the same season. The year-to-date acreage against the ten-year average is how the fire community itself judges the year.
## How to read it
Cumulative and seasonal — it can only rise within a year, and most of it arrives June to September. Read against the same date in prior years; NIFC publishes those comparisons and we store them on their own dates.
## What it does not say
Acres are not damage. A million acres of Alaskan tundra and ten thousand acres of California suburb are not the same event.
