Methodology

## What this measures

This measures daily population-weighted heating degree days for Nevada. A heating degree day quantifies how much colder the temperature is than a baseline, weighted by where people live in the state.

## Why it matters

Organizations with energy supply, distribution or trading operations use heating degree days to anticipate natural gas and electricity demand for space heating. Retailers, logistics providers and construction firms track them to plan inventory, scheduling and labor around weather-driven patterns in activity and costs.

## How to read it

Higher values mean colder weather relative to the baseline, which typically increases demand for heating fuel and affects operations sensitive to temperature. Compare across days or weeks to identify cold snaps or warming trends; compare across years to assess whether a period is unusually cold or mild.

## What it does not say

This does not indicate actual energy consumption, fuel prices or the severity of weather relative to other states. It reflects temperature and population distribution, not how buildings are heated or insulated.
