Party Identification: Republicans (Pew Research Center NPORS)

Latest

27.83%

Methodology

## What this measures

The weighted share of U.S. adults in the Pew Research Center National Public Opinion Reference Survey (NPORS) who call themselves Republicans (PARTY = 1), one reading per survey year, dated at the midpoint of the field period. Percent.

## Why it matters

Party identification is how people describe their own politics, as distinct from how they are registered or how they vote. NPORS is Pew's annual reference survey: a national address-based sample answering online, on paper or by phone, which Pew uses to calibrate its own panel.

## How to read it

Read the level against earlier years. The four party answers (Republican, Democrat, independent, something else) add to about 97 in each year; the rest declined to answer. The three leaner groups add to 100. Use the with-leaners and without-leaners versions consistently.

## What it does not say

One reading a year, from a survey of about 3,900 to 5,700 adults, so a change of a point or two between years is within sampling error. Field periods move: summer in 2020 to 2023, late winter to spring from 2024, and the phone mode was added in 2024. The question is not the one used by the Cooperative Election Study, so the two series are not directly comparable.
