Births: South Africa

Latest

1,186,793births per year

Methodology

## What this measures

The number of live births in South Africa each calendar year, estimated by the UN World Population Prospects 2024.

## Why it matters

Births are the first number to move when a society's choices change, and today's births are the school intake, workforce and consumers of the next decades.

## How to read it

Each point is a calendar year, dated December 31. A falling count can come from fewer women of childbearing age as well as from lower fertility; the fertility rate separates the two.

## What it does not say

Years after the latest census or registration data are modelled. These are estimates through 2023; projections are not included.
