Methodology
## What this measures
The UN's projection of the total population of the world on 1 July of each year from 2024 to 2100, medium variant, from the World Population Prospects 2024. A projection, not a measurement.
## Why it matters
Long-range population projections frame every long-term plan: market size, labour supply, pensions, food and energy demand, and when growth ends.
## How to read it
Every reading is projected (each carries kind = projection); the measured series ends in 2023 and is pop.wpp.population.world. Dated July 1. The medium variant is the UN's central path: fertility, mortality and migration following their most likely course. Read the peak and its timing with the 95% range around it.
## What it does not say
A projection is conditional on the model's assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration. It is not a forecast of wars, pandemics or policy shifts, and it changes with each revision.
