Methodology
## What this measures
The share of S&P 500 companies whose Posture reads **Retrenching** on the last day of each month: capital spending, hiring filings, deals and patent publications low against their own past and their sector, and buybacks large against capital spending. A company reads Retrenching at a score of 40 or less on the 0–100 Expanding ↔ Retrenching axis (with a 5-point margin before it changes stage).
## Why it matters
In the pre-registered back-test, a lower Expanding ↔ Retrenching reading added to a naive forecast of a company filing an 8-K for exit or restructuring costs (Item 2.05, which covers workforce reductions) over the next six months, in both halves of the test period. The effect was small. The share of the index reading Retrenching is the aggregate of those company readings.
## How to read it
Higher means more of the index is pulling back. Read it with posture.sp500.expanding_share: both rising means companies are splitting. A typical month has roughly one company in five at each end. Companies whose evidence is too thin on a date are left out of that month, and a month is published only when at least 70% of members have a reading.
## What it does not say
It is not a forecast, a rating or a view on share prices, and it uses no prices. A retrenching company may be returning cash to shareholders by choice. Before 26 September 2026 the stored S&P 500 membership is the current list carried back.
## How it's built
Every input is used only from the day it became public, and month-end readings are never rewritten. Method and test: palanor.com/methodology/posture.
