Methodology
## What this measures
Total electricity generated in the United States from every source, in terawatt-hours (TWh), one value per calendar year, dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Electricity output tracks industrial activity, population, air-conditioning and, more and more, data centres and electric vehicles. It is the base the source shares are taken from.
## How to read it
Terawatt-hours; one TWh is a billion kilowatt-hours. Compare growth rates across places rather than levels.
## What it does not say
It is generation, not consumption: net imports are not counted. Recent periods are partly Ember estimates.

Ember, electricity data (ember-energy.org/data), CC BY 4.0. Attribution: "Ember (CC BY 4.0)". Ember compiles national statistics, EIA, Eurostat, the UN and other primary sources into one consistent dataset and fills recent periods from monthly data. Palanor re-reads Ember's public CSV on every run, because Ember revises back data as official statistics land.
