Methodology
## What this measures
Total electricity generated in China from every source, in terawatt-hours (TWh), one value per month, dated the first of the month.
## Why it matters
Electricity output tracks industrial activity, population, air-conditioning and, more and more, data centres and electric vehicles. It is the base the source shares are taken from.
## How to read it
Terawatt-hours; one TWh is a billion kilowatt-hours. Monthly totals are seasonal, so compare a month with the same month a year earlier.
## What it does not say
It is generation, not consumption: net imports are not counted. Recent periods are partly Ember estimates.
