China · Fossil Fuels Share of Electricity Generation (Monthly)

Latest

55.94% of generation

Methodology

## What this measures

The share of all electricity generated in China that came from fossil fuels (coal, gas and other fossil fuels), in percent of total generation, one value per month, dated the first of the month: Ember's own aggregate, the sum of its single-source shares. From January 2016 to September 2026.

## Why it matters

The power mix decides how much carbon each unit of electricity carries and how exposed a grid is to fuel prices. Renewables against fossil fuels is the headline split of an energy transition.

## How to read it

Percent of generation. September 2026: 55.9%; in this record it ranged from 53.8% (June 2026) to 79.1% (January 2017). Renewables and fossil fuels do not add up to 100 where nuclear supplies power. Monthly shares are seasonal (solar in summer, hydro with rain and snowmelt), so compare a month with the same month a year earlier.

## What it does not say

It counts electricity generated, not consumed: imports and exports are not in it. Recent months are partly Ember estimates until national statistics are final.

## Source
