World · Hydro, Bioenergy and Other Renewables Share of Electricity Generation

Latest

16.26% of generation

Methodology

## What this measures

The share of all electricity generated in the world that came from hydropower, bioenergy, geothermal, tidal and wave power together (Ember's own aggregate), in percent of total generation, one value per calendar year, dated December 31.

## Why it matters

The power mix decides how much carbon each unit of electricity carries and how exposed a grid is to fuel prices. Shifts in it are the clearest measure of how fast an energy transition is moving.

## How to read it

Percent of generation; the single sources for one place add up to 100. Read it beside the place's total generation (TWh): a falling share can still be a rising amount when demand grows.

## What it does not say

It counts electricity generated, not consumed: imports and exports are not in it. Recent periods are partly Ember estimates until national statistics are final.

## Source

Ember, electricity data (ember-energy.org/data), CC BY 4.0. Attribution: "Ember (CC BY 4.0)". Ember compiles national statistics, EIA, Eurostat, the UN and other primary sources into one consistent dataset and fills recent periods from monthly data. Palanor re-reads Ember's public CSV on every run, because Ember revises back data as official statistics land.
