ERCOT Battery Storage Capacity in the Interconnection Queue (GW)
Latest
162.58GW
Methodology
## What this measures
The capacity, in gigawatts, of battery storage generation projects in ERCOT's interconnection process at the end of each month, from ERCOT's monthly Generator Interconnection Status report. It counts every active request from screening study through signed interconnection agreement, until the plant is commissioned or the request is cancelled.
## Why it matters
Texas is where the U.S. data center and power build-out is moving fastest, and ERCOT publishes its queue every month, a year ahead of national compilations. The fuel mix shows what developers are betting on: solar and batteries dominated the 2020s queue, and gas has been rising since 2023.
## How to read it
Higher means more capacity proposed. Most requests never reach operation. Read the share with a signed interconnection agreement (power.queue.ercot.ia_executed_gw) for the part closer to construction.
## What it does not say
It is requested capacity, not energy, and many projects will be cancelled. The report's scope changed twice, as its own heading says: inactive projects are excluded from the August 2019 report on, and small generators (under 20 MW) are included from February 2022, so read the long series as the queue as ERCOT counted it at the time. Repowering projects count only their net change.
## How it's built
From the Summary sheet's "Major GIM Milestone Status by Fuel/Technology Type, MW" table, the TOTAL column: the Other / Battery row, converted to GW. Each report is dated to the month it describes. History from December 2018.
