Methodology
## What this measures
The number of Kalshi event contracts outstanding at the end of each day, summed over every market on the exchange. A Kalshi contract pays $1 if its outcome happens, so the count is also the dollars the exchange would pay out if every open contract settled YES: open interest at $1 face. Daily, from July 18, 2022.
## Why it matters
Open interest is the money that stays committed to an outcome overnight, not money that changes hands within the day. It is the cleanest measure of how much capital is parked on Kalshi, and how fast regulated U.S. event trading is growing.
## How to read it
Higher means more contracts open. It jumps into big events (elections, the Super Bowl, the World Cup) and falls when those markets settle. Kalshi's multivariate combo contracts (parlays, report tickers starting KXMVE) are included; each day's stored metadata carries the total without them, because they are numerous and cheap per contract.
## What it does not say
It is face value, not the money paid for the contracts: a contract bought at 10 cents counts as $1 of open interest. It is not a count of traders. A market's open interest leaves the total the day Kalshi marks it finalized; reports Kalshi rewrote more than 14 days after their date are skipped (their contract statuses were rewritten too), and Kalshi's report for March 8, 2026 carries no rows dated that day, so a few days are missing.
