India — Avg annual hours worked per worker

Latest

2,382.58hours/year

Methodology

## What this measures

Average annual hours worked per person engaged in production in India. The figure reflects the total hours worked across the economy divided by the count of employed workers.

## Why it matters

Labor input per worker shapes output capacity, unit costs and wage pressure. A decline may signal shorter working weeks, more part-time employment or productivity gains that reduce the need for long hours; a rise often accompanies periods of rapid growth or labor-market tightness. Understanding the intensity of work helps organizations calibrate capacity expectations and benchmark labor conditions in the Indian market.

## How to read it

A rise means workers are spending more hours in production each year; a fall means fewer hours per worker. Compare levels across years to track long-run shifts in working time or across countries to assess differences in labor intensity.

## What it does not say

It does not distinguish between full-time and part-time roles, nor does it capture unpaid work, informal employment or variations across industries and regions within India.
