Japan — Avg annual hours worked per worker

Latest

1,653.9hours/year

Methodology

## What this measures

Average annual hours worked per person engaged in production in Japan. The measure comes from Penn World Table 11.0, an academic dataset constructed for cross-country labor productivity research.

## Why it matters

Hours worked per worker reflect the balance between labor supply, workplace norms, and regulatory constraints. Secular shifts signal changes in bargaining power, work culture, or policy that affect unit labor costs and the feasibility of staffing models. Cross-country comparisons reveal whether productivity differences stem from effort intensity or capital and skill.

## How to read it

A rise means longer average hours per worker; a fall means shorter hours. Compare levels across countries to gauge input intensity, and track changes over time to understand labor-market evolution. The measure accounts for part-time and full-time workers together, so composition shifts alter the average.

## What it does not say

It does not distinguish between full-time and part-time employment, nor does it capture unpaid overtime or hours worked outside formal engagement. The series does not explain why hours change or whether workers prefer the observed level.
