Sweden — Avg annual hours worked per worker

Latest

1,431.5hours/year

Methodology

## What this measures

Average annual hours worked per person engaged in production in Sweden. The series reflects both the intensity of work schedules and the share of part-time employment across the Swedish economy.

## Why it matters

Work hours per person shape unit labor costs, capacity utilization, and the feasibility of output targets with a given headcount. Comparing Sweden's hours to peers reveals whether competitive pressures or cultural norms around work-life balance constrain scheduling flexibility. Long-run changes signal shifts in productivity strategy, labor regulation, or workforce composition.

## How to read it

A rise means the average worker supplies more hours per year, raising effective labor input without headcount growth. A fall indicates shorter schedules or more part-time roles, which may reflect tighter labor markets, policy changes, or a shift toward service sectors. Compare across countries to assess whether Swedish hours amplify or offset differences in output per hour.

## What it does not say

The figure does not distinguish between full-time and part-time workers, reveal hours lost to absenteeism or strike, or indicate whether hours are rising because of stronger demand or weaker productivity. It does not measure unpaid overtime or moonlighting.
