Spain · R&D Spending per Person · € per inhabitant

492.4€ per inhabitant
Methodology
## What this measures
Gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) in Spain: R&D performed by businesses, government, universities and private non-profits, in euros per inhabitant, current prices. Annual from 1981; each value is dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Spending per person shows how much research an economy actually funds, in money, where the share of GDP shows its effort relative to its size. Read together they separate rich countries that spend a modest share from smaller economies that spend a large one.
## How to read it
Higher means more R&D per resident. Compare with the EU (rd.eurostat.gerd_eur_per_capita.eu27). For R&D as a share of GDP, read rd.wb.spend_pct_gdp.<iso3> (World Bank / UNESCO) where it exists.
## What it does not say
It is in current euros: inflation and, outside the euro area, exchange rates move it, so long runs overstate real growth and price levels differ between countries. Eurostat marks some values as estimates or definition breaks. Where R&D is done is not where it is funded: foreign-owned firms' labs count in the host country.
