Methodology

## What this measures

This series measures the advance estimate of total retail and food-services sales in the United States. It provides an early read on consumer spending, covering purchases at retail stores and food-service establishments.

## Why it matters

Consumer spending accounts for the majority of economic activity, so changes in retail sales signal shifts in household demand that affect revenue, inventory needs and hiring across industries. Organizations use this measure to assess whether consumption is expanding or contracting, informing decisions about capacity, staffing and investment. Because it arrives before more comprehensive surveys, it offers an early indication of economic momentum.

## How to read it

Higher values indicate stronger consumer spending; lower values suggest weaker demand. Compare consecutive months to see whether sales are accelerating or slowing. The advance estimate is based on a subsample and will be revised in subsequent months as more complete data become available.

## What it does not say

The series does not break down which categories of goods or services are driving changes, nor does it indicate whether households are spending more because of higher prices or increased volume. It does not reveal regional patterns or the financial health of individual retailers.

## Source

The source is the U.S. Census Bureau series RSAFS (Advance Retail Sales: Retail Trade and Food Services), published monthly and seasonally adjusted. Palanor pulls this series from the FRED API nightly.
