U.S. IRA Assets
Latest
18,175$ billions
Methodology
## What this measures
The value of everything held in individual retirement accounts in the United States (traditional, Roth, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs), across banks, funds, brokerage accounts and insurers, at the end of each quarter.
## Why it matters
IRAs are the largest single pool of U.S. retirement money, swollen by rollovers out of 401(k) plans. Their value moves household spending power and the flows into funds and annuities.
## How to read it
Higher means more retirement wealth. It was $18,175 billion in the first quarter of 2026, down from $18,725 billion at the end of 2025. Read with the other retirement.us series; together they add to retirement.us.total_assets.
## What it does not say
Z.1 values are end-of-quarter levels in nominal dollars, not adjusted for inflation, and they move with stock and bond prices as much as with saving. The Fed revises past quarters with each release. IRA figures arrive a quarter later than the pension figures.
