Japan · Services Value Added · % of GDP

Latest

71.43% of GDP

Methodology

## What this measures

Gross value added by services: trade, transport, finance, real estate, business, public administration, education, health and other services (ISIC divisions 45–99), as a percentage of gross domestic product, Japan, each year, from the World Bank's World Development Indicators (NV.SRV.TOTL.ZS). 1994 to 2024.

## Why it matters

Most of output in rich economies and the main source of jobs everywhere. A rising services share is the mark of a maturing economy.

## How to read it

2024: 71.4% of GDP. Agriculture, industry and services together come to a little under 100%: GDP also counts taxes on products less subsidies, which no sector adds.

## What it does not say

Value added is output less inputs bought from other industries, at basic prices, so a sector can matter more for jobs or trade than its share suggests. Country series rest on national accounts of varying quality and base years; a new base year can shift the whole series.
