Methodology
## What this measures
The part of foreign holdings of U.S. equities held by foreign official institutions (central banks, finance ministries, and sovereign wealth funds that TIC classifies as official), in billions of dollars at market value, end of month. January 2020 to August 2026; the old Table 1D did not split out official holders, so the series starts in 2020.
## Why it matters
Shows how far governments, not just private investors, have moved reserves and savings into U.S. stocks.
## How to read it
August 2026: $2,627 billion, 10.4% of all foreign holdings.
## What it does not say
TIC attributes holdings to the country where the custodian or the reporting investor sits, not to the ultimate owner, so financial centres (the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Switzerland) stand in for investors elsewhere. Market value, so it moves with U.S. share prices as much as with buying and selling. Includes fund shares and other equity, not only listed stocks. Before 2020 the series is the older Table 1D; Treasury revised the overlapping months, so a small step at January 2020 is possible. Whether a sovereign fund counts as official depends on how it reports.
