Netherlands · Tourism Intensity: Nights per Resident (annual)
Latest
8.12nights per inhabitant
Methodology
## What this measures
How many nights guests spent at tourist accommodation in Netherlands during the year for each person who lives there. Tourist accommodation means hotels and similar, holiday and other short-stay accommodation, and campsites (NACE I55.1 to I55.3). One value per year, dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Tourism intensity shows how much a place depends on, and is pressed by, visitors relative to its own size: housing, water, transport and public services shared with guests, and an economy tilted toward hospitality. It is the usual yardstick in debates about overtourism.
## How to read it
Higher means more tourism for the size of the population. Small island and Alpine countries rank high even when their visitor numbers are modest in absolute terms; large countries rank lower even with large totals. Compare countries in the same year.
## What it does not say
It counts nights in rented accommodation only, not day visitors, cruise passengers or stays with friends and family. A country-wide ratio hides concentration in a few cities and coasts.
