U.S. Trademark Applications Filed (Monthly)

Latest

55,867applications

Methodology

## What this measures

The number of new trademark applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in each calendar month, counted by filing date, one per application whatever the number of classes it covers.

## Why it matters

A company files for a trademark before it launches a brand, a product line or a business, often months ahead. Filings are an early, hard-data read on new products and new businesses, and they fell sharply in 2008–09 and jumped in 2020–21 with the surge in new online businesses.

## How to read it

Higher means more new brands on the way. Filings are seasonal (fewer in December), so compare a month with the same month a year earlier. The series starts in January 2000 at 23,412. The latest month, September 2026, is 55,867. The high is 93,039 (December 2020) and the low 14,185 (December 2001).

## What it does not say

An application is not a launch: many marks are abandoned, refused or never used, and one company can file many marks for one product. Counts move with USPTO fees and rules (the USPTO raised fees and changed how goods are described in January 2025) as well as with demand.

## How it's built

One count per application (serial number), by filing date. History from January 2000 comes from the annual backfile; from January 2025 Palanor keeps one row per application, first seen in the backfile or a daily file, and recomputes the last 24 months on every run. A month is published a week after it ends: new applications reach the daily file the day they are entered.
