Methodology

## What this measures

The number of companies and other bodies incorporated on the UK register in a month with a registered office in South East England, counted in the first monthly Companies House snapshot after the month ends. Dated at the start of the month. The region comes from the registered-office postcode.

## Why it matters

It shows where in the UK companies are being formed, monthly.

## How to read it

The series starts in September 2023 at 7,549. The latest reading, for September 2026, is 7,212. The high is 10,229 (April 2024) and the low 5,158 (December 2025).

## What it does not say

Every body on the register counts: private and public companies, community interest companies, limited liability partnerships, limited partnerships, charitable incorporated organisations and overseas entities. Leaving out the bodies that are not companies reproduces Companies House's own count of incorporations within a handful (April 2026: 67,062 against 67,059). An incorporation is not a trading business, and some companies are formed in bulk by agents. A company incorporated and struck off within the same month is not counted. Companies House did not publish a June 2025 snapshot, so removals for May and June 2025 are missing and May 2025 incorporations were counted in the July file. The registered office is an address for post, often an accountant's or a formation agent's, so London and a few agent-heavy postcodes count more companies than trade there. Under 1% of companies have a postcode that cannot be placed.
