Methodology
## What this measures
The number of companies and other bodies incorporated on the UK register in a month whose first SIC 2007 code is in section I, Accommodation and Food, counted in the first monthly Companies House snapshot after the month ends. Dated at the start of the month. The sector is the company's own first SIC code, chosen when it registers.
## Why it matters
It shows which industries new UK companies are being formed in, monthly.
## How to read it
The series starts in September 2023 at 5,126. The latest reading, for September 2026, is 4,963. The high is 6,295 (April 2024) and the low 3,506 (December 2025).
## What it does not say
Every body on the register counts: private and public companies, community interest companies, limited liability partnerships, limited partnerships, charitable incorporated organisations and overseas entities. Leaving out the bodies that are not companies reproduces Companies House's own count of incorporations within a handful (April 2026: 67,062 against 67,059). An incorporation is not a trading business, and some companies are formed in bulk by agents. A company incorporated and struck off within the same month is not counted. Companies House did not publish a June 2025 snapshot, so removals for May and June 2025 are missing and May 2025 incorporations were counted in the July file. The SIC code is self-declared and rarely updated; a company with several codes counts in the section of the first. Dormant companies (SIC 99999) and the "non-trading company" code (74990) are not in any section.
