The number of open jobs UK employers are recruiting for, from a business survey, averaged over three months.

## Why it matters

Vacancies fall before unemployment rises, so they are an early read on labour demand.

## How to read it

Compare with the number of unemployed. Vacancies peaked near 1.3 million in 2022.

## What it does not say

It counts openings, not hires, and excludes agriculture.
