Methodology
## What this measures
Active-duty members of the Air Force assigned anywhere in the world, from the Grand Total row of DMDC's quarterly report on military and civilian personnel by duty location, from September 2008.
## Why it matters
The size of each service is the most direct measure of the force the country keeps; recruiting shortfalls and force-structure decisions show up here.
## How to read it
August 2026: 320,580 active-duty members. The services add to the active-duty total (us.dmdc.active_duty_personnel_worldwide).
## What it does not say
Counts by assigned duty location reports, dated on each file’s "As of" date: one September file a year for 2008–2012, then every quarter. DMDC printed "N/A" for active-duty totals from December 2022 to June 2023, so those quarters are missing. The Air Force and Space Force were one column from December 2021 to September 2022; Space Force members are counted separately from September 2023 and inside the Air Force before. In the December 2021 file the services add to 4,659 more than DMDC’s printed total. The Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security, counted here as DMDC reports it.
