Metro Population Growth · Tyler

Methodology

## What this measures

How much the population of the Tyler, TX metropolitan statistical area grew or shrank in the year to July 1, as a percentage of the population a year earlier.

## Why it matters

Metro growth is where housing shortages, school crowding and labor supply show up first. The fastest-growing metros pull in employers and builders; shrinking ones face falling tax bases.

## How to read it

Percent change from the prior July 1. The U.S. grew about 1% in 2024, an unusually fast year driven by immigration.

## What it does not say

It does not split growth into births, deaths and migration. The 2020 point compares a July 1, 2019 intercensal estimate with a July 1, 2020 estimate from the newest vintage: both are tied to the 2020 census, but they are different estimate series, and the point is flagged in its metadata. Recent years are revised each March.

## Source

U.S. Census Bureau, Population Estimates Program: the newest vintage of the metropolitan and micropolitan statistical area totals file (CBSA-EST) for 2020 on, as published; for 2010-2019, the 2010-2020 intercensal county estimates summed over the metro's counties in today's delineation (a Palanor sum of Census figures; metros built from Connecticut planning regions have no 2010s points). Metro definitions: Office of Management and Budget, July 2023 delineation. A work of the U.S. Government (17 U.S.C. §105), public domain. Palanor reads the public files weekly; each March's new vintage rewrites every year from 2020. Growth is a Palanor calculation: (population ÷ population a year earlier − 1) × 100. Each point keeps both populations.
