U.S. Producer Price Inflation · Final Demand (Monthly Change)

Latest

1.34% m/m

Methodology

## What this measures

The percent change in the seasonally adjusted U.S. Producer Price Index for final demand from the month before. Monthly; not annualized.

## Why it matters

The monthly change is the number the Bureau of Labor Statistics leads its release with. It shows a turn in producer prices months before the 12-month rate does.

## How to read it

Above zero, producer prices rose in the month; below zero, they fell. Single months are noisy, mostly from energy, food and trade margins: read several in a row, and the 12-month change (us.ppi.final_demand.yoy) for the trend.

## What it does not say

It is not annualized. Months are revised four months after first release, and seasonal factors are revised each year, so earlier monthly changes can move.

## Source

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Producer Price Index, series PPIFIS (final demand, seasonally adjusted), via the FRED API (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis). BLS data are in the public domain; cite the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Palanor computes the 1-month change from the published index, so it can differ from the BLS release by a rounding tenth.
