Methodology

## What this measures

How fast Hawaii's economy grew in a quarter: the percent change in real GDP from the previous quarter, expressed at an annual rate. Quarterly, in percent.

## Why it matters

It is the headline growth figure for the state, the number the Bureau of Economic Analysis ranks the states by each quarter. It shows where growth is concentrated and which local industries are driving the national figure.

## How to read it

Percent at an annual rate: the growth the state would see over a year if the quarter's pace held. Above zero, the economy grew; below zero, it shrank. Single quarters swing with farm output, energy prices and one-off events, so a run of quarters says more than one.

## What it does not say

State GDP is revised with each release and again each September. A big quarter in a small state can come from one industry, such as farming after a harvest or mining after a price jump. It is production in the state, not the income of its residents.
