Business Applications per 100,000 Residents · Kansas

Latest

1,477.7per 100,000 residents

Methodology

## What this measures

Applications for a new Employer Identification Number from businesses in Kansas in the 12 months to each month, summed from the Census Bureau's seasonally adjusted monthly counts (us.state.ks.business_applications) and divided by the state's resident population, per 100,000 residents. Palanor's calculation. Monthly, from June 2005 (the first full 12 months).

## Why it matters

It puts business starts on the same footing for large and small states, so the states where people are starting businesses fastest can be compared directly.

## How to read it

Applications per 100,000 residents over a year. Higher means more business applications relative to the population. The 12-month window smooths out single-month swings, so turns show up a few months late.

## What it does not say

An application is an intention to start, not a business: many never hire anyone or open. Census screens out applications that are not business starts (estates, trusts, tax liens and similar). The state is the business address on the application, which can differ from where it operates. Seasonally adjusted figures are revised each year. Residents are the July 1 estimate for the month's year; months in a year the newest population estimates don't cover yet use the latest year (recorded with each point).
