Exports to China Minus Exports to the EU · Kentucky

Latest

-5,673$ millions

Methodology

## What this measures

Whether Kentucky sells more goods to China or to the European Union: twelve-month exports to China minus twelve-month exports to the 27 EU member states, in millions of U.S. dollars.

## Why it matters

It answers a simple question about the state's exposure: in a trade fight, is China or Europe the bigger customer? States that sell more to China are more exposed to Chinese retaliation; states that sell more to Europe, to European demand and EU trade policy.

## How to read it

Millions of dollars over a year. Above zero, the state exports more to China than to the EU; below zero, more to the EU. Most states sell more to Europe, so a positive reading is unusual. The size of the gap depends on the size of the state, so compare signs and direction across states rather than raw levels.

## What it does not say

The state is the state of origin of movement: where the goods started their trip to the border, which is usually but not always where they were grown, mined or made. Goods consolidated at a warehouse or port in another state are credited there. It counts goods only, not services, and not goods that leave through a third country first. Values are free-alongside-ship, in current dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Recent months are revised.
