Methodology
## What this measures
Personal income per person in Maine: all income received by the state's residents in a year (wages and salaries, business income, rent, interest, dividends and government benefits) divided by the state's population. Annual, in current dollars.
## Why it matters
It is the standard way to compare how well off residents of different states are, and it frames local spending power, tax bases and demand for housing and services.
## How to read it
Dollars per person per year, before taxes. Higher means more income per resident. The figures are in current dollars, so part of every year's rise is inflation; compare states within the same year, or with national per capita income.
## What it does not say
It is an average, so a few very high incomes raise it; it is not what a typical household earns. It does not adjust for the cost of living, which differs widely between states. It counts income where people live, not where they work. The Bureau of Economic Analysis revises recent years each September.
