Methodology
## What this measures
The real gross domestic product of Rhode Island: the value of all final goods and services produced in the state, adjusted for inflation to chained 2017 dollars. Quarterly, seasonally adjusted, at an annual rate, in billions of dollars.
## Why it matters
It is the broadest measure of the size of Rhode Island's economy and how fast it is growing, and the state counterpart of national GDP. It shows which states are pulling the national economy along and which are holding it back.
## How to read it
Billions of chained 2017 dollars at an annual rate: each quarter is scaled up to what a full year at that pace would produce. Compare quarters with each other, or use the growth series (us.state.ri.real_gdp_growth_saar) for the pace. Chained dollars of different states should not be added up exactly; they are close but not additive.
## What it does not say
It measures production in the state, not the income of the people who live there; commuters and out-of-state owners blur the two. State figures are built from national prices, so local price differences are not reflected. The Bureau of Economic Analysis revises recent quarters with each release and several years each September.
