Methodology
## What this measures
The number of active-duty service members (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force (counted with the Air Force from December 2021, separately from September 2023), and the Coast Guard) assigned to a duty location in Utah, as counted by the Defense Manpower Data Center on the date each report gives. One reading each September from 2008 to 2012, then every quarter from September 2013.
## Why it matters
Military bases are large employers and buyers in many states. The count shows where the armed forces are concentrated, and changes show base realignment and unit moves that shift local jobs, housing demand and spending.
## How to read it
Persons on the report date. Bigger states tend to host more, so compare states with the share of all active duty in the U.S. (us.state.ut.active_duty_share). The U.S. total is us.dmdc.active_duty_personnel.
## What it does not say
Location is where a member is assigned for duty, not where they live or are from, and the current report leaves out most people on temporary duty or deployed in support of contingency operations. Files through September 2017 were compiled by location with deployment records, and the report changed to assigned duty location from December 2017, so counts across that break are not fully comparable. DMDC did not publish active-duty totals for December 2022, March 2023 and June 2023 (the Army is "N/A"), so those quarters are missing. A state's count moves with base openings, closures and unit moves. It counts people, not spending. The National Guard, reserves and civilian employees are in the same report but not in this count.
