Methodology
## What this measures
The value of goods exported from Washington to China over the last twelve months, in millions of U.S. dollars. Each point is the sum of twelve monthly figures, dated on the first day of the last month.
## Why it matters
It shows how much of Washington's business depends on Chinese buyers, and so how exposed the state is to tariffs, retaliation and China's economy. Set against exports to the European Union (us.state.wa.exports_eu_12m), it shows which market matters more.
## How to read it
Millions of dollars over a year. A twelve-month sum removes seasonal swings, such as harvest exports, so a rise or fall is a real change in trade. Compare with the state's total economy, or with the EU figure.
## What it does not say
The state is the state of origin of movement: where the goods started their trip to the border, which is usually but not always where they were grown, mined or made. Goods consolidated at a warehouse or port in another state are credited there. It counts goods only, not services, and not goods that leave through a third country first. Values are free-alongside-ship, in current dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Recent months are revised.
